Come play with ideas and words- find joy and wisdom in your voice, build confidence, and embrace your creativity! This poetry workshop is designed for beginner writers. No prior poetry experience is necessary. In this three hour session we will explore the power of writing to understand ourselves and our experiences and to bring healing and wellness to our everyday lives. Participants will be encouraged to express their feelings and write from the heart.
The theme of this workshop will be age. Age is more than just a number- it’s an experience rich with memories, hopes, disappointments, joys, and rites of passage. In this workshop we will explore the richness of our ages- past, present, and future. We will read two poems that celebrate the sense of promise and loss that comes with turning another year older. This will serve as a spring board for a discussion about our own experiences and feelings. Participants will engage in warm-up free-writes, discussion about the chosen poems and will then be prompted to write their own poems based on the self-exploration they have done during the group discussion. Writing as a transformative process will be emphasized and supported through the sharing and discussion of participants’ poems. The atmosphere will be supportive, non-judgmental, and encouraging- the perfect place for beginning writers curious about the possibilities of poetry of in their lives.

The theme of this workshop will be food. Food is both a sacred and banal part of the human experience. Necessary and indulgent, taken for granted and savored, lamented and celebrated, food is full of meaning and contradiction. Whether abundant or scarce, it is in the background and foreground of our daily lives, family, culture, health, and lifestyle. It shapes our memories, our sense of self, and the lens through which we experience the world. In this workshop we will explore the ritual of food and the role it has played and continues to play in our lives. We will read two poems that celebrate our relationship with food and the richness that comes from discovering its meaning in our lives.
Materials: Please bring paper and a pen, an openness to new ideas, and a willingness to share your feelings with the group. Poems will not be posted or distributed before the workshop. A fresh, first reading of the poem for everyone will help us to tap into our initial emotional responses to it.

"All that glimmers"
by Randall Jarrell
What a girl called "the dailiness of life"
(Adding an errand to your errand. Saying,
"Since you're up . . ." Making you a means to
A means to a means to) is well water
Pumped from an old well at the bottom of the world.
The pump you pump the water from is rusty
And hard to move and absurd, a squirrel-wheel
A sick squirrel turns slowly, through the sunny
Inexorable hours. And yet sometimes
The wheel turns of its own weight, the rusty
Pump pumps over your sweating face the clear
Water, cold, so cold! you cup your hands
And gulp from them the dailiness of life.
